ITEM 1: COLLEGE BOARD: Since there is significant interest in classes beyond BC Calculus (Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations), it would be nice if the College Board listened in on the communications. Does anyone have a contact that could be added to our list?
ITEM 2: LISTSERVE and EMAIL: At this time, our method of communication is email. You can either do a "reply all" or copy the email addresses out of the spreadsheet and simply paste them into the address field in your email. You can also sort the spreadsheet and just email to names of interest such as people using the same textbook, or living in the same state. Thanks to Dan Teague, this should change in the fall. Here is a piece of his email:
"The MAA has agreed to host a list for us through the SIGMAA on Teaching Advanced High School Mathematics. I'll be sending information about the list, how to join, and how it will operate once I know what it is.
I just wanted everyone to know that we are good to go in the fall. We have a very nice mix of high school teachers who have taught multivariable calculus for years, high school teachers interested in teaching for the first time, and university mathematicians who have expertise to share. I look forward to the conversations."
ITEM 3: STEWART TEXTBOOK OFFER: I received this email from Pat Murphree of Thompson Learning. She is offering to send a complimentary copy of the Stewart textbook to interested teachers. By the way, our school uses Stewart's Calculus 5th Edition Early Transcendentals Multivariable (ISBN 0-534-41778-7). Our book contains only chapters 10 thru 17 to keep the cost down and lighten the weight for the student. We use Foerster for AB Calculus and BC Calculus. Here is a piece of her email:
"I have been following the discussion about teaching multivariable in high school, and thought I might chime in to offer to send one of these books to anyone in your new list of folks who are or may be teaching Multivariable. Often it is difficult for high school teachers to know how to track down college texts, so this might make it easier. I have listed the three books in the order in which they sell best in both high school and college. Stewart's calculus books are used in 38 of the top 50 engineering schools in the country, and to anyone interested, I would be happy to provide adoption lists.
Please email my assistant in the Belmont office, Trisha Ashbrook, at trisha.ashbrook@thomson.com with their school name and address, as well as their home address, if they prefer that we send the book there. Trisha will place the orders right away. Have them specify the isbn of the book that they prefer to see as well which can be picked up just under the title on each linked page. If you or they have any questions at all, I can be reached at pat.murphree@thomson.com"
